In Résonance with the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale 2019
To bring out an object, to acknowledge the shape, the outline. Build a movement. Open the often fixed and constrained threshold. Create a passage.
Develop tools and materials as devices. Allow the instantaneous drawing of an object or a space by the gesture.
Vincent Gernot has no favorite materials. A leaf, an object, a piece, or a territory can become the supports of the gestures, forms, ideas, lines or volumes that generate the tools, techniques or materials used.
The concept of threshold, which gives its title to this first personal exhibition, is often at the heart of its devices, as "a prerequisite for the very idea of openness, limits to exceed, to override, to explode" precise the artist.
If the drawing is commonly defined as a representation or suggestion of objects on a surface using graphic means, the proposal of Vincent Gernot, then considers the space of La BF15 as this surface. In a few gestures, the design is produced from materials (often building construction) modeled upstream in the workshop.
For Seuil, Vincent Gernot uses geometric construction and the explosion of matter as two compositional materials.
Born in 1991, Vincent Gernot graduated from ESADSE, the School of Art and Design of Saint-Étienne, where he lives and works.
He exhibited his work at the Milan Triennale in 2016 (Design after Design exhibition) and in Saint-Etienne as part of the Design Biennial in 2017 (My favorite studio and Fukushima mon amour). He has also worked in various collectives, including the collective Breche (Backyard in 2017) and the collective Au détour (And if the blue of the sky was something else in 2018).
